Transcontinental papers accepted into prestigious club
The Globe and Mail and La Presse, two daily papers owned by
Transcontinental, have been accepted into the International Newspaper
Colour Quality Club for 2008 that consists of the 50 best printed
papers in the world. Membership in this elite club is determined by an
International competition, which takes place every two years. President
and CEO of Transcontinental, Francois Olivier says “our
newspaper-printing outsourcing model, which combines state-of-the-art
technologies and a participatory work organization, allows publishers
to entrust the physical production of their products to the experts and
focus their resources on their main activity, which is to produce
high-quality content, make the most of this content and continue to
develop their brands. This latest international honour shows that our
outsourcing model delivers what publishers want and that it’s a win-win
situation for everybody. “ http://www.transcontinental.com/en/5-news-centre/08-03-12.html
Saputo Inc. suing Canadian papers
Canada’s largest cheese maker, Saputo Inc. is suing three Canadian
newspapers and one Italian publication for defamation. This comes after
an article, which ran in December, they say suggests the company’s
chairman Emanuele Saputo was involved with organized crime. The company
is suing CTVGlobemedia, which publishes the Globe and Mail; Quebecor
Inc., the owner of the Sun Media group of papers, and Gesca Ltd., the
owner of Montreal's La Presse newspaper and Italy's L'Espresso. CEO of
Saputo Inc. and son of the chairman, Lino A. Saputo says, “We will not
tolerate the dissemination of false and misleading information which is
harmful to our name, reputation and business interests.” All four
papers declined to comment. http://www.cbc.ca/money/story/2008/03/10/saputo.html
U.S. daily papers take a dive
A recent study of major U.S. daily papers has revealed a large decrease
in circulation. The study, which spanned from September 2003 to
September 2007, compared circulation data and saw a decrease of about
1.4 million copies, which translates to about a 10% loss of overall
circulation. Some papers seemed to be hit harder than others. The Los
Angeles Times reported a 20 per cent loss and the San Francisco
Chronicle took a plunge of almost 30%. However, it seems there are some
exceptions. A couple papers actually reported a slight increase in
circulation. USA Today and New York Post both came in with a two per
cent increase. To view the full list of publications and the decrease
in circulations, please click

American Community Newspapers fighting the law
American Community Newspapers is going back to court to appeal a law,
which prohibits door-to-door distributed printed literature to those
who display a no-soliciting sign on the property. The newspaper
company, which is comprised of 16 papers and based in North Texas,
feels the prohibition violates freedom of speech and freedom of press.
In 2006 the city ruled against the company after receiving complaints
from city residents. On February 8 a federal judge confirmed the
original ruling but that has not stopped American Community Newspapers.
They have already filled an appeal with the U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals in New Orleans. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/fn/5606657.html
