La Presse cutting Sunday edition

The Canadian Press reports that Montreal’s La Presse, owned by Gesca Ltée., a subsidiary of Power Corporation, will cease publishing its Sunday edition as of June 28 in order to cut costs.

A meeting was held with Publisher and Gesca Ltée. President Guy Crevier on Monday to discuss the newspaper’s finances. The french daily is hoping to reduce annual costs by $26 million. The elimination of the Sunday edition will save $3 million annually. Crevier has said operational efforts to improve La Presse’s situation will be shared among all staff at the paper, including managerial positions.

Union leader Helene De Guise has noted other concessions that have been discussed include the possibility of trimming employees’ vacation time, and their current four-day work week.
