Newspaper executives employed by Canadian media giant Canwest Global Communications Corp. could be included in the proposed five per cent wage cut that was recommended in a letter sent to union leaders by Dennis Skulsky, president and CEO of the company’s newspaper operations, according to a report by the Canadian Press.
John Douglas, a spokesman for Canwest said the proposed pay cuts would involve everyone – union workers, management and executives – working in the newspaper division, which would result in $20 million in savings per year. Douglas maintains that the wage cuts have yet to be “set in stone”, and that they were meant to be an example of the critical financial situation Canwest is in as it continues to struggle under a $3.9 billion debt load.
Both company officials and senior labour representatives are planning to discuss the proposed cuts in a meeting sometime this week, according to Skulsky’s letter.
