An article by Jennifer Saba of Editor & Publisher highlights the findings of a study by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) on the newspaper industry in North America. According to the research done by PWC, the industry will lose approximately $13 billion in revenue by 2013, a majority of it from print advertising. PWC has estimated print advertising alone will drop from $36.7 billion in 2008 to $24.3 billion in 2013.
It was noted that Canada’s newspaper market is much stronger than the market in the US, thanks to the steady competition in the industry, a slower rate of declining circulations, and an increase in free papers. Due to this, Canadian newspapers are faring much better financially during these rough economic times. US newspapers, however, have been estimated to suffer more staggering declines in print advertising revenue.
On the bright side, PWC is anticipating online advertising in the US will eventually increase, stating, “We expect that an expanding economy will translate into growing online spending and project a return to double-digit growth in 2013.”
