Still time to register: King’s College CAR Summer School

There are still a few spots available in the 2010 King's College Summer School in Computer-Assisted Reporting (CAR). And great news: the deadline to reserve a room in the Dalhousie University Residence has been extended to June 1.

Now in its third year, the school is Canada's only national boot camp for advanced reporting techniques. It runs from June 21 to 25 at the University of King's College in Halifax.

At the CAR summer school you will learn from award-winning journalists about reporting techniques that will separate you from the rest of the pack.

Over five days, we'll cover how you can use your computer to crunch through information to find big stories. We'll cover how to use both spreadsheet and database software. Plus, for the first time, we'll show you how to use simple web-based mapping tools to visualize your data for use either online or in print.

As always, this training is being offered at affordable rates. If you register before June 5, it costs only $375 for five days and $250 if you are a student or work at a publication with a weekly circulation of 30,000 or less. The price increases $100 after June 4.

As always we are offering residence accommodations for those on a budget. This year, the accommodations are just a short walk from King's at Dalhousie University. You can get a room for $48.35/night, taxes included. The rate also includes access to the school's excellent fitness facility, Dalplex. If you want one of these rooms you need to contact Dalhousie by June 1. After that, it's first come, first served. You can reserve online at www.dal.ca/confserv or by calling 1-888-271-9222. Mention that you are with the King's CAR Summer School group.

For those who prefer a hotel, the nearby Lord Nelson has a special rate for attendees. You can download the registration pamphlet (http://blogs.ukings.ca/carincanada/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/pamphlet2010.pdf), or call Kelly Porter at 902-422-1271 ext 159 to register, or contact Fred Vallance-Jones at Fvjones@dal.ca.

The CAR summer school is fast becoming a Canadian journalism tradition and we're having an amazing spring in Halifax. Hope to see you there!
