German weekly magazine publishes ‘augmented reality’ edition

Germany’s largest daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung published an ‘augmented-reality’ edition of its weekly magazine last week. Working with Munich-based technology firm Metaio, the two companies were able to integrate a print product with wireless technology to produce an interactive experience for readers.

After downloading Metaio’s iPhone and Android app, junaio, readers can use their smartphones to activate several interactive experiences on the cover and within certain articles which see still images turn into videos, an interview with additional quotes, a crossword puzzle whose answers appear and more when viewed through the phone.

Dr. Dominik Wichmann, editor in chief of the magazine, said, “[Süddeutsche Zeitung] always tries to extend journalistic frontiers. We don’t just write about new cultural or technical developments, we practise them. Instead of just reporting on Augmented Reality (AR), we have developed with the help of metaio a magazine issue which for the first time allows our readers to actually experience this new technology within a journalistic format.”

Metaio's Jan Schlink adds, “Our technology leads to new opportunities for combining and displaying information from different sources. With imagination and creative applications Augmented Reality can not only be fun, but become a real opportunity for news organizations to present interesting content in unusual ways.”

This is a significant advancement made to Esquire magazine’s Augmented Reality Issue published in November 2009, with which users needed to view the magazine through a desktop webcam in order to see the interactive content.
