Australian futurist predicts print newspapers irrelevant in 2022

Internationally-respected futurist Ross Dawson spoke yesterday during a ‘Future Forum’ at the Newspaper Publishers Association conference in Australia where he delivered a new timeline for the end of newspapers in their traditional printed format. By 2022, Dawson predicts, the majority of media companies will have transformed into ‘new media’ businesses and will provide content to consumers on mobile platforms.

It is Dawson’s belief that by that time, tablets and other e-reading devices will cost no more than $10 and in some cases be given away for free. “More sophisticated news readers will be foldable or rollable, gesture controlled and fully interactive,” he said.

While Dawson also says newspapers will be irrelevant in a future media economy, established news organizations that can reinvent themselves and provide content and social connections for readers will survive.
