Attention OCNA Members!
Many of you might not know this, but the OCNA has a charitable arm called the Ontario Community Newspapers Foundation. Founded in 1986 by OCNA board members after a particularly lucrative Monte Carlo night, the OCNF was launched to help support journalism, journalism education, and the "betterment of community newspapers".
We are able to use the OCNF to receive and distribute charitable donations for our member newspapers.
The OCNF is a registered charity and as such we can issue tax receipts for donations. The plan is to allow interested publishers (OCNA members) to communicate to their readers the request for donations. Donations would be made online directly to the OCNF, who would then pay the full amount donated (less financial supplier fees) to the identified newspaper, and issue a tax receipt to the donor.
We have built a website (www.ocnf.org) to use as a donation portal. Interested donors can enter the site, select the newspaper that they want to support from a drop down menu, and the amount they wish to donate. Payment can be made by PayPal, credit card or cheque. Tax receipts will be issued for the full amount, automatically.
The OCNF will then send a cheque to the newspaper for the full donation amount, less financial services fees. The OCNF will not take any fees: currently, we intend to collect and process donations at no charge.
It is the newspaper's role to encourage readers to donate, and to direct them to the OCNF website. We also ask that you reference and support the OCNF as well.
We will be providing you with communication and creative templates to use in print, online and in social media. Ideally, you would each create your own personal appeal to your readers. We have samples of those too which we will provide.
This opportunity is open to all members of the OCNA, and is entirely optional.
